Valentine day recipes for kids

The colour for Valentine’s Day is RED (for love) so all red fruits such as strawberries, raspberries, cherries and cranberries are great to use for cookies, cakes and desserts. Tomatoes (known as the ‘love apple’) are also great to use for Valentine’s Day salads. Chocolate is also a prime ingredient for Valentine’s Day desserts and cream adds a touch of luxury to almost anything. Hearts and flowers are popular as forms of presentation at this time and can be used for many dishes.

For Valentine’s Day recipes for kids (and even adults) we want dishes that are easy to prepare, tasty and colourful and here we have plenty of ideas for you.

For salads try one of the following using tomatoes, fruit and a few other tasty ingredients…
Love Apple Salad – Slice tomatoes thinly horizontally, discard the hard top and bottom. Place slices in an attractive salad bowl. Add some Worcester sauce, malt vinegar and a sprinkle of basil. Leave to marinate for at least 30 minutes and serve chilled.
Splendid Raspberry Salad – wash and chop some lettuce leaves, add some whole raspberries, sliced kiwi and crushed nuts. Add some raspberry vinegar and mix together. Chill and serve.
Greens, Grapes and Feta Salad – salad greens, halved grapes and diced feta cheese tossed in a red wine vinegar dressing.

Some snacks and light meals to try….
Three flavour layer flan – Roll out some flaky pastry and place in a pie dish, keep the trimmings. Spread a layer of mustard on the bottom and sides of the pastry shell. Add a layer of fresh chopped tomatoes then a layer of chopped Cheddar or Emmental cheese. Sprinkle some chopped oregano on top and a pinch of salt and pepper. Form the pastry trimmings into a heart and place on top. Cook in a moderate oven for about 20 minutes until light golden brown in colour.
Love pizzas – Cut some large flat bread rolls in two. To each half add the following; a layer of tomato puree, either chopped mushrooms, chopped ham or chopped pineapple, add a slice of Cheddar or Emmental cheese cut into the shape of a heart. Sprinkle with chopped oregano, a tiny pinch of salt and pepper and place under the grill for ten minutes or so until light golden brown.

Finally some quick and easy desserts…
Chocolate covered strawberries – whole strawberries dipped in chocolate hazelnut cream and served with fresh thick cream.
Tender Fruit Trio – Wash and cut in halves a mixture of cherries, strawberries and raspberries. Add a cup of strawberry or raspberry juice. Mix and chill. Serve with amaretto biscuits.
Raspberry cream – chop some raspberries, mix with thick whipped cream, top with sugar and a little ground cinnamon, decorate with chocolate hundreds and thousands and a whole raspberry. Chill in the fridge.

Just looking through the Internet there are hundreds of websites that have lots of different ideas for Valentine Day recipes for kids from starters to main courses, salads to desserts, cookies to cakes. When you do serve your culinary creations though don’t forget to decorate the table. A red tablecloth and some big cut out white paper hearts to put under the serving dishes will look lovely. Add some flowers in a vase and it’ll be beautiful!
