Om mantra

Those who have had experienced a spiritual life or at least thought of it and researched on that topic, must have invariable heard about the word “OM”. This in itself gets you to know about the popularity and importance of the OM mantra in the world of spiritual life. The OM mantra is the one, according to the Mandukya Upanishad, a part of vedic teachings of ancient sages, was the primary important constituent of any mantra that the sages used to attain a worldly spiritual knowledge. The sages had discovered or invented the word, no one knows, but the benefits and the great things associated with the OM mantra remains completely authentic. OM mantra has even been analyzed by modern day researchers and has been found to be greatly beneficial and fascinating, as it does many good things to our body.
The OM mantra has invariably become the single most used mantra among all others as it is integrated with every other mantra targeted at any other deity under consideration. The working of the OM or some refer to it as AUM, is explained in detail by many of the religious researchers and enthusiasts. They say that the AUM takes our mind into a state of tranquility and calmness, makes it to take a path where each and every part of the body and soul gets activated and at most functional.
In OM mantra, the path taken by our mind is quite as interesting as it is when we do it. Initially its taken to a state where the mind gets into sleepiness like state, but with complete conscious. Next the mind travels along a path of conscious, sleep and unconscious states before eventually ending up in a state called “turiya” which all of them say as a state that cannot be defined by words.
The OM mantra seems to direct the flow of stream of energy into specific paths across our body and this what makes the difference inside us. Similar changes are found in brain activity too, but the complete picture is yet to be obtained. The OM mantra makes one realize himself, ones self. This what is considered the most important aim in many religions across the world. The OM mantra is so powerful that even an ignorant layman uttering the word is benefited in some or the other way.
Thus we see that the power of the OM mantra is incomparable to any of the other well known ones. Though every mantra has its own quality, OM still stands tall among all of the others. The OM acts as a benefactor for all ages and will do so for many more generations to come!

Mantra text

Typically in Sanskrit language, mantra is a spiritually written text or mystical syllable or a poem with religious value. The origin of mantras is basically in the ancient Vedic age of Hindu cultural civilization. But later it developed and transcended to the west and in the far-east up to Japan.

Mantras are basically interpreted to be as effective audible medium or a typical religious vibration. The results of uttering mantras are thought to be enhanced power, development of thought, and capacity to distinct between false illusion or Maya and reality.

Mantras are also associated with a definite type of yantra. A yantra is more than just random drawings or carvings. They represent different mantras. The etymological references suggest that mantra contains the word man; this is the thinking capacity or mainly mind. The suffix tra is used and hence the literal translation can be the instrument that helps one to think. The thinking instrument or mantra later developed into other mystical forms of writing in china and Japan.

In Sanskrit mythology there is a mystical Hindu mantra called “OM”. While it being only a word denotes more than everything. It is the complete mantra of all mantra or the Parammantra. It denotes Brahman. Aum is central to both Hinduism and Buddhism.

There are many Hindu mantras in Sanskrit syllabus, many for praying gods and goddesses. The gayatri mantra is one which is very important. This mantra is basically transferred to a young boy when his upanayan (a cultural Hindu ritual) is happening or to a girl when she is getting married. This mantra is given by a guru or a priest. This person becomes very important later to the boy whose upanyan has happened.

Another famous mantra in Sanskrit is:

Aum Asato ma sad gamaya
Tamaso ma jyotira gamaya
Mrtyorma amrtam gamaya
Aum santi santi santi

This mantra means god led me from ignorance to truth, from darkness to light, from mortality to immortality, Aum peace peace peace.

Accordingly there is a famous Buddhist mantra called “OM MANI PADME HUM”. Still the meaning being in shadow, there are many speculations. The direct or layman translation of the mantra would be “OM”: a very mystical one word mantra of Hinduism, “MANI”: pearl or a precious stone, “PADME”: one who is sitting in PADMA or lotus and “HUM” is person.

Thus, mantras are connected to gods; they are thought to be begot by god to the devotee himself. This creates the importance of mantra and the association of mantra with tantra and yantra.

Mantra

The word “Mantra” practically refers to a word that is to be recited repeatedly by a person, in a state of meditation or doing yoga, or simply having complete concentration, controlling his mind this way. Mantra may sometimes refer to the poems or hymns that are recited towards gods or goddesses. The ultimate aim of a mantra always seems to be same. The frequency related with the words in the mantra appears to be of some magical quality, as they have wonderful effects on the physical state of various parts of our body.

The mantra concept appears to have originated primarily from “India”, and the historic evidences say that these words were the once used by sages of ancient period when they were involved in deep meditations and other rituals of mind. The mantra seems to have some trick to the sages and these mantras are the once appearing in many Vedic scriptures. The devanagiri script, one of the most ancient script till date has many records of such mantras and each of them certain unique quality in them.

The use of mantras was very much varied and different as the mantras itself. There were many mantras meant for many different purposes. But eventual effect was that it made the physical being to function well and did some greater good to the mind and body. It’s still a debatable aspect as to whether the sages where great and so practiced the mantra recitations, or the other way around. But either ways, it is pretty obvious that mantra instills upon our soul some certain qualities and makes us better in an extraordinary way, which we are not fully aware of. The present day practitioners give credit to the mantras, as much as they give yoga.

Scientific researchers approve that the base of a mantra is sound, and energy based on sound is made use of to bring about betterment of the body and mind. The main aim of using a mantra seemed to be for getting the calmness into ones mind and to bring vital parts of our body active, so that they function better. The repetitions of the mantras are the basis of having the concentration factor maintained across the meditation task.

This type of approach by Vedic age people reinforces the idea that Vedic sages considered the life to be a form of energy. The mantras are for channeling the energy of life in a particular direction. But scientifically these beliefs prove to be correct as the sound energy from the mantra revitalizes our body and mind. The good we do, the good we reap, goes the saying and mantra is proven to be good!

Mantra music

According to Hindu mythology and mysticism, a mantra is a physically existing speech, which has an effect on almost all physical body including mind, body, emotions and everything in this cosmos. The word meaning of mantra would be an instrument of thought.

During the Vedic period in India, the mantras were originated by saints and priest who said that it was directly inherited upon by god and these speeches were transmitted upon them directly by the almighty.

Theses verses in sacred scriptures of Hinduism, express oneness as the repeatedly used one word mantra called “AUM”. And there are still many mantras and tantras which are performed and recited with special stress on some words or places. These stress and expressions create a unique music like inspiration.

According to Hindu mythology everything in this cosmos has a name. Thus, every word, every stress and every thing that otherwise have no name; has a name in Hinduism. In view of that, everything in the universe has a physical existence. Even words and mantras are physically existing entities. So, when one recites a mantra, he is creating an effect to the physically existing mantra. Thus, each uttering or recitation has its unique meaning and distinctness among anything else.

Accordingly, if you study the Upanishads of Hindu mythology, you will also have a chance to learn that the universe as a whole is mere sound. Everything that has a physical existence is just the result of illusionary sound.

So anyone who has grown an expertise in uttering the correct form of the name of anything, he will be able to bring into life the thing whose name he could successfully utter.

The trisyllable A-U-M represents the three gods who are responsible for creation, preservation and dissolution of the universe. The combination whereas, defines Brahman: anyone who has read about the Vedas and the Upanishads. This trisyllable mantra also represents the three states of consciousness, the dreaming stage, the stage of deep sleep and the stage of awakening.

A mantra not always, but sometimes is associated with a yantra. A Yantra is mystical diagram which represents the mantra and usually have diagrams about gods or many physically existing natural objects like sun, moon, stars etc.

Mantras are uttered in a rhythmic repetition, which is also known as japa. Many types of mantras are used and they are uttered in a rhythmic pattern. Some are in one line and some are only a word; but there are mantras which are somewhat longer. Due to recent development we can easily get mantras in CD or DVD. We can get it even in the internet and buy them in order to listen to the magical power they possess in them.

Green tara mantra

The Green Tara mantra is in praise of the Goddess Tara (meaning “star”) in her green form, where she symbolizes herself as a savior and governor of this planet Earth. The star is a mobile one which is seen to move across from one side to the other. Similarly, Tara is the Goddess who helps human beings to cross the sky of “life”. In Tibet she is called D”lma, “she who saves”. Thus Tara is the goddess who is to be sought if a human being likes to get through his miserable life and meet the ultimate aim of worldly knowledge and complete awareness.
From the general trend of Gods that, male deities represent bravery and compassion and female deities represent wisdom and mind oriented strength, Tara is portrayed as a Goddess of compassion and protection. She is believed to have got her a green color skin to symbolize that she indeed is the protector of the earth, especially the guardian of the earth full of forests. In the Green Tara’s mantra we call upon the Goddess Tara in all her manifestations through the first lines “O? Tare Tuttare Ture”. Then we ask her protection in an unique way other than the way adopted in other mantras.
It is believed that Tara’s compassion and love for the beings in the world extends limitlessly. The mantra addresses her as a mother and we call for her mercy and protection. Infact the love showed by her upon us seems to be more than that of a mother towards her children. Tara known as the “one liberator”, “swift protector” is known for her helping deeds to human beings. She is the one who is to be sought after if we want our miseries and troubles removed from our lives.
The compassion of hers’ is unparalleled and we praise her the most for that quality, for she had wanted to be in this world for helping us liberate us from the same. The way in which we address ourselves us as her children in the Mantra, makes the Goddess Green Tara forget our bad deeds and reach out with her helping hand in the most disastrous situations.
Thus by having the blessings of the Goddess Tara, we entitle ourselves to get the maximum out of our life, by avoiding the obstacles that are present in this world. She helps us to concentrate more on the liberation of our worldly dependency by taking away all physical troubles. Lets all pray the almighty green Tara with her mantra and remove all of the obstacles and make ourselves free and to take ourselves close to Mokshya.
