Street break dance
The beat of the African Americans and Latin Americans continue to pulsate after the first emergence of street break dancing. This pop culture shaped the contours of local dance during the early 1970s. The music that goes with it is funk or hip-hop music. DJs highlight the music break and even have it remixed to prolong the breaks and people lap it up.
In a street break dance, a breaker boy or girl, or b-boy or b-girl lets loose to the music. The rhythmic beat stirred dancers to showcase their dancing skills during the break. Rival gangs tried to beat each other with the latest maneuver or footwork. As the dance rivalry escalated newer or more difficult but innovative dance moves were incorporated to outperform each other.
The street break dance went to conquer talent shows and disco clubs. The craze also changed the lives of young people in the ghetto. They saw the dance as a way to express their anger and individuality. This received media attention and accolades for the Afrikaa Bambaataa.
In the 1980s it popularity waned. Its comeback was popularized in commercials and movies. Annual battles of the dance are held and the biggest sponsor for this competition is the Red Bull BC One. This kind of dancing is not structured. It is improvisational, incorporating moves that have to be practiced to perfection. A regular dance round undergoes several transitions. There is the toprock that later changes to the downrock. There’s a frenzy of power moves and then the freeze. The freeze is sometimes called a suicide.
Doing the toprock the dancer performs a series of steps while standing. This is usually the beginning of the dance. After a warm up, the dancer segues to the downrock. This is performed on the floor. The hands and feet do the motions. Here, the break dancer uses the strength of his upper body to dance. The power moves are the flare, swipe, and windmills. This is a display of strength and staying power. The acrobatic butterfly kick is an impressive display of dexterity and grace.
The freeze is the hardest to execute. The dancer suspends himself on the air with the support of one arm. This pose is the handstand or pike. With the lock, there is the sharp transition in the freeze. The suicide puts an end to the dance. The more “painful” the suicide the better.
Break dance moves
The style and rhythm of break dancing is unlike traditional dances. There are several different moves in break dancing yet there are no clearly defined standard moves.
Due to the nature of the style, break dance moves are an eclectic collection of moves. There are no set steps as the dance depends highly on the innovation and imagination of the dancer rather than their inherent dancing skill. This is does not mean that break dancing does not require skill, however. In fact, it takes quite a lot of skill to master break dancing.
Break dance moves can be set in three categories although some moves will not fit into any of the three. Basically, these are the footwork, the freezes and the power moves.
The footwork mainly involves showing the dazzling speed and consummate skill of the dancer by performing a fast transition, complicated set of foot movements without any mistake and without losing the beat of the music.
A few Footwork moves are the 1-step, the 2-step, the 3-step, the 6-step, the 12-step, the CC, the Pompo or Switch and the Helicopter. These are just the common footwork break dance moves.
The freezes are also an integral part of break dance moves. Freezes can be likened to a pause in the break dance. When a break dancer goes into a freeze, he or she stops moving but displays a characteristic pose while pausing.
A few types of freezes are the Airbaby, the one handed Airbaby, the Airchair, the Baby Freeze, the Chair Freeze, the Handglide Freeze, the Planche and the Elbow Freeze. These types of freezes are referred to as Ground Freezes as they are usually performed with the dancer on the ground. Another type of freeze is the air freeze where the break dancer performs the freeze after a kick up to the air. A few air freezes are the G-kick, the Headstand, the Hollowback and Invert Hollowback, the K-Kick, the L-Kick, the Nike, the Pike and the V-Kick which is also called the Applejack.
The Power Moves often involve break dance moves which are intended as highlights of the break dance. These moves are the ones that require the most skill and are considered to be the most complicated part of the break dance. One of the most recognized break dance moves is a power move called the Flare. The Flare involves swinging the legs in a circular motion around the body while balancing on the hands.
Other notable power moves include Floats and Spins.

Poplock break dance
The pop lock break dance was made famous by the Pop lock dancers after refining the robot walk Michael Jackson did. There are many ways to the pop lock dance.
A pop lock version of waving arms slowly, locking joints for a sec, unfreeze, and pop you go again. The dance makes out like a robot moving about. The newer version has both arms moving in opposite directions. There are exaggerated shoulder and head movements.
There are many dance steps incorporated into the pop lock moves. There’s the Vanilla Ice. With one foot you take one step forward, slide the same foot back. At the same time, place the other foot forward. This is repeatedly done while moving the arms forward and backwards. When this is done very fast, the dancer looks as if he is running. A fancier trick is to pivot on one foot and the other alternately. Pop Lock has a charm of its own is a tough act to do.
Dancers may drop to the floor, do a whirl, and shrug a shoulder. The body gyrates, bends forward and backward in slow or abrupt motions. There are sudden jerks here and there. Dancers can get up without hands please and pop up do another drop. They do can do alternate leg kicking on air which is really amazing. Young men can leap and land in a split. Some move as if they are in mortal combat. Oh the moves they make are always eye popping, and never cease to wonders to the dance.
The dancers can lean as far back and never miss a beat. They pop up right and drop quicker than a heart beat, leap and drop back. The fast hand movements, the jumping and kicking, the gyrating and head whirling, makes pop luck break dance something else. Each dancer has his own style. Each has a strut, a kick, and leap. Pop lock break dance allows dancers more freedom of expression.
The pop lock and break dance need long hours of training and practice. One cannot jump into the arena do the pop luck or break dance without any prior practice. Many aspiring dancers get CDs on how to execute the impossible motions. They can learn to do knee jerks, upper body popping, body twisting and fluid arm and hand movements. Watching dancers go through their motions is very entertaining. You can marvel at their creativity, ingenuity, and stamina. So much energy goes into these dances.
Break dancing is danced to funk music remixed to lengthen the music breaks. Break dancing is more physical. The dancer leaps, splits, whirls on his back or does some somersaulting. There is not much of dancing to the rhythm; it is more of dancing with music.
In pop locking there are some criticisms about using the name pop locking together as these are two different dances. So whatever it is, pop luck or break dancing there is much to do before anyone can get raves for a performance.
