Life in australia
Australia is a good place to live and raise a family. However like almost everywhere else you’d live, the opportunities are there if you take advantage of them. It’s a big country despite the fact that it is the smallest continent in the southern hemisphere with the exception of Antarctica. Most of the interior is hot, dry desert, but the locations where the majority of Australia’s residents live are in a much more temperate climate. On the northern side, there are large areas which are tropical, complete with mangrove swamps, forested terrain and and grasslands. If you’re in love with the ocean and things like scuba diving and snorkling, the northeast coast offers access to the Great Barrier Reef which is nearly 2,000 miles long-the largest coral reef in the world.
The people of Australia are a friendly, diverse group numbering a bit over 21 million. That’s not too many considering they are living in a country with an area of nearly 8 million square miles. This explains the low population density. Two percent of the total are indigeneous people, mostly aborigines who add to the cultural and ethic diversity of the country. The lion’s share of the Australian populace actually reside in cities and suburbs concentrated on the northeast and southwest coasts. These include the largest city, Sydney and Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Canberra which is the country’s Capital Territory.
Australians love the outdoors in every way, shape and form and all kinds of sports are popular. The coastal areas boast many of the world’s finest beaches, some of which face what are called “the biggest waves there are” to the delight of the surfing crowd.
You will also be exposed to unque animals, plants and birds that are found nowhere else. These include kangaroos, wombats, koalas and, on the offshore island of Tasmania, the ferocious Tasmanian Devil.
Major cities like Sydney, Melbourne and Perth are quite cosmopolitan. They offer a variety of good restaurants, great shopping and fine entertainment. Excellent employment opportunities result from a fast-growing business sector and there are fine educational institutions as well. Tourism contributes to the economy too, with more than 2.5 million visitors to Australia each year. In spite of all these things, the pace of life is much lesser than United States of America and it makes life far more peaceful. All this results in Australians being able to enjoy excellent wages for a higher than average standard of living and an outstanding quality of life.

Australian tourism
What they knew was that Australia is one of the finest tourist destinations anywhere in the world. That it has more adventures to offer than anywhere else. And that it has friendly, warm residents that make every tourist’s visit truly enjoyable. These seem like excellent reasons why all those people visited Australia in the 12 months that ended on July 30, 2007. These figures also represent a 3 percent increase over the same period in the year before, so the secret must be out.
Where did they come from? Official Australian data shows that in the period between January and July of this year, 278,000 were from the United States; 82,100 from Germany; 65,800 from Canada; and 626,100 from nearby New Zealand. The remainder visited from every corner of the world.
One good reason that Australia is such a great tourist destination lies in the fact that the country has a diverse climate and topography to suit everyones taste. Adventures can be planned for all of the six Australian states, Tasmania and several offshore islands. There are outstanding locales for hiking, backpacking, swimming and surfing, fishing, road trips, off-road excursions and more. There’s even downhill and cross-country skiing available in one or two locations during the winter months. Perhaps you just want to tour the countryside, visit historic coastal villages and take oodles of pictures. There are plenty of places to do that too like the 168-mile long Great Ocean Road skirting the scenic coastline in New South Wales. Whether you like wind-swept waves crashing against coastal rock formations, mountains, deserts or rain forests, you will find them in Australia. And don’t forget that you can see unique animals, birds and plant life here that you can’t see anywhere else except on Animal Planet or The Discovery Channel on your TV.
In the event you want help from experts in planning your Australian tour(s), there are numerous tour operators available online via the internet that can put the entire trip together for you well in advance of your arrival data. They can show you how to tour by cars and campervans, see the country in a comfortable train or jump from state to state by airlines that provide flights within Australia. They can arrange the transportation, the accommodations and even recommend the finest restaurants to eat in and things to see on your tour. There are also bus tours hat come complete with a professional tour guide who can steer you to each destination and point out the best things to see and do along your route. Whatever you prefer, Australia will make it a reality.

Cheap flights to australia
In general, the cost of airline tickets from the United States to Australia is not really cheap even if advertised that way. After all, it’s a long, long trip that takes anywhere from 14 to 20 hours each way even on non-stop flights. This being said, it is still possible to enjoy a substantial savings by shopping air carriers carefully and purchasing a ticket as far in advance as you can. This is easier by far if you do so online via the Internet where all the carriers and travel agents stand ready to provide you with both a quote and your reservation quickly with a credit card payment.
In pricing a round-trip ticket from Sydney Australia to Los Angeles, California and visa versa, price quotations were obtained for a one way ticket on September 20th with a return 7 days later. Ticket prices for nonstop flights varied from $1,324.60 to $2,211.60 from Qantas; $1,701.60 to $2,336.60 on American and cost $1,619.60 for the single United flight given for that date set. Qantas showed other flights with one or two stops in Nadi and Auckland that were actually six dollars more than their lowest non-stop flights. American’s flights with a single connection stop in Auckland were priced the same as their lowest non-stop fare and a few dollars higher with a stop in San Francisco only. Air Canada also provided fare information showing that their non-stop flights with stops in either San Francisco or Vancouver varied between $1,733.60 and $2,031.60 for a round trip ticket. Finally, Air New Zealand offered a round trip fare with stops in Nadi, Auckland or Christchurch for $2,247.00 while Air Pacific came in with a one-stop price of $2,031.70 for a round trip fare. Extending the return trip time from 7 days to 30 days showed about a 20-30% reduction in these prices.
The above prices were obtained from one of the major online travel expeditors. And while there is a possibility that shopping still others may have produced a slightly lower fare, it seems unlikely when compared to fares directly from the airlines websites.
Air Travel to and from Australia and New Zealand to the U.S. has increased significantly during the past several years. This is particularly true in America’s summer months when
as more tourist vacationers consider those destinations prime. The real key to obtaining the cheapest-possible fare is to purchase well in advance of any planned trip.

National library of australia
The National Library of Australia grew out of the Federal Parliamentary Library that was established in 1901 in Canberra. In 1960, the National Library Act created the National Library of Australia as we know it today. Currently, the library occupies a building reminiscent of the Greek Parthenon in design which is located on Canberra’s Lake Burley Griffin. It houses a very-large collection of books, maps, manuscripts, journals, audio recordings and microfilm and is not open to the public. It’s also interesting to note that under Australian copyright law, every book published in the country is also sent to the National Library.
The Australian National Library is continually involved in digitizing its literature collection and now has more than 100,000 selections available in digital format for use via the internet. It has already achieved status as a world leader in digitizing literature for internet dissemination. They have never been shy of using technology and were one of the first universities in Australia to start digitizing their books for benefit of the readers far away.
The very-large library building in Canberra features various reading rooms and literature collections. There is a main reading room on the ground floor where most of the library’s internet terminals are located and can be used via wireless connection. Services are also available from the Petherick reading room for advanced readers and also from the map, microcopy and newspaper reading rooms which also occupy the lower ground floor area of the library building. In addition there are manuscripts and photographs on the second floor and collections from Asia on the third floor. There is also a small amount of aspce for readers at the Hume Annex.
The depository for the Australian National Bibliographic Database is within the National Library and is accessible from Libraries Australia services. Details including ISSNs, ISMNs and Catalogue-in-Publication are made available to publishers from the library upon request.
Huge picture collections are available from Picture Australia, a library service that makes searching more than forty digitized databases of Australia, its citizens and their lifestyles possible. This data is obtained from images arriving from libraries, museums and others.
Finally, the National Library of Australia offers Libraries Australia, a unque sharing service for Australian libraries and their many readers. This service enables inter-library lending, cataloging and referencing and has the Australian National Bibliographic Database a its center. This database details the precise location of more than 40 million printed items spread throughout national, academic, state and public and special libraries.
Western australia
Western Australia is the country’s largest state occupying an area of 1,021,478 square miles. With the exception of Russia’s Sakha Republic, it is also the largest individual subset of any country in the world. It was initially settled by indigeneous peoples more than 40,000 years ago and by the British around 1826. More than 2 million people reside in the state today and most of these live in Perth and smaller cities and towns extending along the coast line. Perth is Western Australia’s capital city which in itself is home to 1.5 million people who represent 75% of the state’s total population. It is a modern city with a definite British flavor. It is also the most isolated city, being closer to Jakarta, Indonesia than Sydney on Australia’s northeast coast.
There are significant climate and terrain extremes here. The land is old and eroded and contains soils with very poor fertility. The southeastern coast is a temperate climate that used to be heavily forested with Karri trees which are some of the world’s tallest As an agricultural area, the soils require heavy fertilization in order to be productive for farming. Massive clearing of the land has also made the area one that has the highest incidence of threatened and endangered species. It has also led to a very-high salt content and lack of fresh water. Rainfall here varies from 12 inches/year at the Wheatbelt region to 55 inches in the wettest places near Northcliffe. However, as a result of evaporation, it is very dry between November and March.
The central area of the state is mostly desert where few people live and where the only industry is mining. Rainfall is typically between 8 and 10 inches annually but fall sporadically in large amounts over a short period from cyclones in summer months. In the northern tropical regions of Western Australia (The Kimberly), one finds a hot, monsoonal climate with 20-60 inches of rainfall per year. The exception is the long rain-free season between April and November. It rarely snows in Western Australia except in the Stirling Mountains located near Albany, which is far enough to the south and has enough elevation.
Like most of the country, Western Australia has diverse ethnicity. Approximately 33% of citizens are of English ancestry followed by 27.8% of Australians, 7.6% Irish and lesser amounts of Italian, Scotish, German and Chinese. At last count, there were also enough indigeneous people to account for 3 percent of the total state population. This ‘mix’ provides the cultural diversity that helps Western Australia stand out amongst the states.

Australian history
Australia was first discovered by Europeans in 1606 but wasn’t claimed for Great Britain until Captain James Cook arrived there in 1770, and was not actually colonized until 1788. Nevertheless, the continent was inhabited by indigeneous people called Aborigines more than 40,000 years ago. These natives were primarily nomadic hunter-gatherers who lived mostly along the coastlines but also in the desert interior in fewer numbers. Once the British arrived, the Aborigines way of life began to change. As a people, Aborigines are rich in tradition. They created mythical tales known as the ‘dreamtime stories’ which tell of the creation of landmarks, rivers and constellations of stars. They also invented the boomerang and the didgeridoo. Today, many have embraced the main popklation’s culture and ways, but some still continue their native traditions. Still others dislike the British society and feel not adequately compensated for years of mistreatment.
Sydney, today’s largest city, was the first British settlement in Australia. Although originally occupied as a British penal colony, Australia’s first big increase in immigration took place in 1901 when gold was discovered. This led to a period of growth, expansion and prosperity, but ended in economic depression. Australia had developed ino six distinct states that became a unified federation in 1901. The states include: The Autralian Capital Territory (Canberra); Victoria (Melbourne); New South Wales (Sydney); Queensland (Brisbane); South Australia (Adelaide); Northern Territory (Darwin); Western Australia (Perth) and Tasmania (Hobart).
Australia did play a role in World War I, but their campaign with the ultimate aim of capturing Constantinople failed for many reasons. Despite this failure, they still celebrate Anzac Day whnich commemorates their landings at Gallipoli and the battle that followed.
In World War II, Australia delivered a force of more than 850,000 men from their total population of 7 million. Most of these were sent to aid Great Britain in Libya and the Middle East and part of the RAF in England proper. They also sent troops to Singapore just prior to its capture by the Japanese. WWII also resulted in close relations between Australia and the United States and hosted more than 1,000,000 U.S. troops in 1944. They Australian army also invaded Borneo at the end of WWII. Finally, Autralia took part in both the Viet Nam War and the second Iraq War. They support the U.S. in the war on terrorism which is debatable among the country’s populace.
Australia currently has a free-trade agreement with the United States and also has special trade treaties with both Asia and the U.S. It now boasts a population exceeding 21 million
And is a premiere destination for worldwide tourists. The country’s cost of living and overall economy is considered better than average.
